In a study conducted by University of Kassel , 489 practicing dentists were asked what properties interdental wedges needed to possess. The results showed that wedges need to

• be anatomically contoured, so as to ensure that the matrix also contours with the existing shape of a tooth
• have good grip for safe and easy insertion into and removal from interdental spaces
• be usable without having to awkwardly search for correct size and fit through trial and error
